The record-breaking ride of Mark Beaumont at Herne Hill yesterday inspired me to get my penny-farthing out again today. I initially got interested in modern-day penny-farthings when I came across this video about the London Nocturne by chance. I did a bit of online research and was – by design – most fascinated by the Standard Highwheels manufactured in Sweden.

The Guardian article ‚Do you work more than 39 hours a week? Your job could be killing you’ got me thinking. It’s sentences like these that got me alerted: ‘Employees who were sedentary for more than 13 hours a day were twice as likely to die prematurely as those who were inactive for 11.5 hours. The authors concluded that sitting in an office for long periods has a similar effect to smoking and ought to come with a health warning.’

It all started with the failure of UK air traffic control services on 12 December 2014. As a consequence of the system failure, all departures from London airports and all departures from European airports that were planned to route through affected UK airspace were stopped. My British Airways flight BA958 from London Heathrow to Munich was one of the many cancelled flights.

'In Parenthesis' - very dark and incredibly powerful

At an event that I recently attended at Faber & Faber, Owen Sheers highly praised ‘In Parenthesis’ by David Jones. I haven’t managed to read the book yet but I saw the Welsh National Opera’s production of Iain Bell's opera ‘In Parenthesis’ which is based on David Jones’ epic poem at the Wales Millenium Centre in Cardiff last weekend.

I came across this book in an online article by the German newspaper ‘Süddeutsche Zeitung’ where it said you can either order a copy from the Georgian Grand Hotel Ushba or from the Norwegian publishing house Forlagshuset i Vestfold.
